Learning how to make organic shampoo is easy and fun to experiment with. These shampoos are a great way to clean and protect your hair without having to worry about the chemicals used in typical shampoos. For a shampoo to be truly organic, it must contain only organic ingredients; otherwise it would qualify as a natural, or herbal shampoo. The distinction is subtle, but for many, it is an important one because it means the ingredients have not been exposed to chemicals ever.
The ingredients present in organic shampoos vary depending on how you want your hair to smell and what it is you need the shampoo to do. The common cleansing ingredient is castile soap which usually uses an olive oil base, but can also use coconut, hemp, jojoba, or almond oils. You can purchase this soap either online or from a bath and body store, or you can make it yourself. [See: How to Make Castile Soap]
Essential oils are then added to the soap to produce pleasant fragrances as well as making your hair and scalp healthier, depending on its needs. For example, if you need to control dandruff, try chamomile tea and tea tree oil. If you have oily hair, use mint. This will give you that cooling menthol tingle on your scalp as well as keep oils under control. Other common ingredients include rosemary, lavender, lemongrass tea, coconut milk, sage tea, and even eggs. You can mix and match ingredients until you find a smell you love and hair to die for. The specific proportions aren’t important, but you generally wants to maintain a 2:1 ratio of soap to oils. This is only a general guideline though. Experiment and have fun.
Keep in mind, these ingredients can spoil so store your organic shampoo in a sealed container, in a cool, dark place; maybe even the refrigerator. Also, rinse your hair with warm or cool water. Hot water strips hair of its nutrients and oils, and will prevent the oils, which stay behind after a cool rinse, from doing their job on your hair and scalp. You can also compliment your shampoo with an homemade organic conditioner.
