If you’ve decided to clean your own gutters then you’re probably wondering what kind of tools you will need to get the job done quickly and efficiently. Of course, you will need a ladder so you can reach the gutters. Then you will need something to get the debris out of the gutter clogs. The main part of gutter cleaning is scooping out the leaves and the wet mess that get stuck in there. Therefore, your most important tool is your gutter scoop. There are many different types of gutter scoops and different places that you can buy them.
First, you can buy a plastic scoop that is actually called a gutter scoop at any large home supply store like Home Depot or Lowes. They usually cost somewhere between five and ten dollars. They’re about twelve to fourteen inches long with a handle on one end. The sides come up high so that it almost looks like a cylinder with one side cut out. When buying this type of a scoop, make sure to measure your gutters first. Measure how wide they are and then try to find a scoop that is just slightly less wide than that. If the gutter scoop is as wide as the gutters you will be able to remove more debris with every scoop.
You can also use tools that were originally intended for other purposes as a gutter scoop. For example, any plastic scoop will do the same thing as one marketed for gutter cleaning. Just make sure that the scoop is the right size. You can also use garden trowels or large spoons. These tools will make the job move a bit slower because they have less capacity.
If you are feeling adventurous, you could make your own gutter cleaning tool out of an empty quart milk or juice container. Leave the lid on and the handle intact. Cut out one side of the container in a V-shape so that you still have the bottom and two sides to act as your scoop. This will work great as long as the measurements work out.
